Dolphin drive hunting, also called dolphin drive fishing, is a method of hunting dolphins and occasionally other small cetaceans by driving them together with boats and then usually into a bay or onto a beach. Their escape is prevented by closing off the route to the open sea or ocean with boats and nets. Dolphins are hunted this way in several places around the world. The largest number of dolphins are hunted using this method in Japan, however the practice also occurs on the Solomon Islands, the Faroe Islands and Peru. Dolphins are mostly hunted for their meat; some are captured and end up in dolphinariums.

To Whom It May Concern:
It has come to my attention that dolphins are being maliciously slaughtered during the Faeroe Islands' dolphin drive fishing. This practice involves manipulating the dolphins' route and destination by forcing them together and into an area from which they are unable to escape. Once imprisoned in this area, they are needlessly and violently slaughtered; indeed, this hunt is not justified traditionally, economically, or ecologically, establishing only materialistic greed as motive.

It is imperative that your country bears witness to this massacre and provides immediate relief on behalf of our animal friends. Dolphins are marvelously intelligent beings; like humans, they possess sentience, and are capable of thought, emotion, pain, and suffering; it is our obligation to practice empathy and provide protection, not cruelty. To intentionally restrict these animals and sanction their slaughter is evidence of arrogance and indifference; it is important for you to acknowledge that the world is aware of this violence and demands its discontinuation. Furthermore, you should be aware of the toxicity of dolphin meat, and that consumption of such could prove dangerous.

Surely it would be agreeable that yours is a country of beauty and adventure, but when you allow such violence to befall these innocent animals you indeed allow indifference and cruelty to permeate your communities and tarnish the world view of you. Please, I implore upon you to act swiftly and responsibly by enacting an immediate moratorium on dolphin drive fishing. Regrettably, until such a time, I feel my only recourse is to promote a boycott of your country with respect to both tourism and products. Please provide your obligatory duty and responsibility by protecting these animals and upon your enactment of the moratorium, I will once again feel complimentary towards your country and discontinue a boycott.

 Please tell the Prime Minister and Tourist board that hunts are no longer necessary to provide food for islanders and that studies show that dolphin meat contains toxins that are unsafe to consume. Also, pilot whales, who are intelligent social animals, are forced to endure severe physical and psychological suffering during the drive hunt—the hunt does not meet humane slaughter standards at any level. You can add that the hunts tarnish the Faroe Islands' international image and discourage tourists from visiting.

3.)Start a Protest, Rally or Petition in Your Local Area

On Tuesday, June 30, 2009 10:00am - 7:00pm at the Danish Consulate in London a Protest will take place.  Consider starting one in your own City. Let's remind them of the magic of these pilot whales. Ask them to remove the killing from their tradition and instead to use their music, poetry, song and traditions to inspire peace not hatred.

Paul Watson: "I have fought Faeroese whalers and the Faeroese authorities for years. We have had dramatic confrontations in Faeroese waters in 1985 and 1986 and again in 2000 trying to stop the pilot whale drive where entire pods are driven into shore, knifed, speared, stoned and clubbed in a barbarous orgy of cruelty and waste.

I have seen the bays of the Faeroe Islands stained red with blood and I've heard the screams of mortally wounded whales pleading for their lives as insensitive brutes drunk on slaughter are showered in the hot blood of the whales, laughing and swearing as their vicious blades rape the whales repeatedly. It is a monstrous spectacle and it is an obscenity fully embraced by the Danish government and many of the Danish people."
